You send a fax to Canada from the US exactly as you would to a US number: Canada shares country code 1 with the US, so a Canadian fax number is 1 plus 10 digits, with no international prefix. Enter the 10-digit number (or +1 and the number) and send. In Faxsure, faxes to Canadian numbers cost the same as faxes to US numbers, and the price is shown before you send.
Why it works like a US number
The Canadian Numbering Administrator describes it this way: “Canada is part of Country Code 1, and participates in the North American Number Plan (NANP) with the USA and 18 Caribbean nations.” A Canadian number has the same parts as a US one: “a 3-digit Numbering Plan Area (NPA), commonly called the Area Code, a 3-digit Central Office (CO) Code, and a 4-digit Line Number.” So there is no 011 and no separate country code to add.
Steps
- Copy the fax number exactly from the letter, form or website that gives it: the 3-digit area code and the 7-digit number. It may be printed as
(NXX) NXX-XXXX,NXX-NXX-XXXXor+1 NXX NXX XXXX; all three are the same number. - Enter it in the app. You can type or paste it with or without +1, spaces, dashes or brackets. The app checks that it is a valid US or Canadian number.
- Add a cover sheet if you want one. It is free and does not count as a page. In the app, the cover sheet’s labels can be switched to French (or another of the app’s languages) for the recipient, while your own text stays as you typed it.
- Check the price and send. The price follows the page count, the same for Canada as for the US. You get a notification and a PDF receipt when the recipient’s machine confirms the pages.
Check the number is in Canada
A +1 number is not always in the US or Canada. The same country code is used by 18 Caribbean nations, and Faxsure sends only to US and Canadian numbers, so a number in another +1 country is not accepted.
To see where an area code is, the Canadian Numbering Administrator’s area code page links to area code maps and a “CO Code/Phone Number Lookup” tool. Toll-free numbers in Canada use the same codes as in the US (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888), which the administrator lists as “Shared with other CC1 NANP area nations”. Before you send
- The right number for the purpose. A Canadian office may list one number for general mail and another for a specific form or program; use the one the form or letter gives.
- Delivery is not processing. The receipt shows the recipient’s fax line accepted the pages at that time. How long the office takes to act on them is up to the office. See how to know if a fax went through.
